The most important thing I've learned from my mom about sewing is that it is just thread. If you mess up it is nothing to be ashamed of, or terribly bummed about, because you can always cut it out and start over.  I have only been sewing for a year now, but I feel so empowered to try whatever I can imagine for our new home.  My latest project was my biggest so far: I made curtain valances for our baby girl's room.  To begin, my husband and I created frames for both valances from 2x4s and fence brackets for less than $10.  I found this fabric and fringe from Hobby Lobby on sale and created a pattern.  I used a large round mirror to trace the scalloped shapes and a T-square to sew the hem... I think it must be unconventional... but I did what I could and laughed at myself whenever I could.  I was just so happy I pulled it off.  I will post updated pictures once I finish the window seat pillows and paper pom poms.
